Layering and Combining 3D Voxel Images
LayerGeo
The LayerGeo module is a key component of GeoDict’s image modification toolkit, working together with ProcessGeo to enable precise editing and transformation of 3D voxel-based geometries. With LayerGeo, users can layer, add, or subtract material models created from imported µCT or FIB/SEM scans via ImportGeo-Vol, or from digitally generated structures using modules such as GrainGeo, FoamGeo, or FiberGeo. The module allows two or more 3D geometry models to be combined into complex multiphase structures, forming the basis for subsequent evaluation of material properties with analysis modules like FlowDict or PoroDict.
Typical applications include modeling multilayer filter media, sand control screens, and laminated composites made of carbon fibers with different orientations. The module can also be used to construct sandwich structures, combine cathode and anode geometries with a separator layer for battery simulations, or to stitch together scans of large samples that cannot be captured in a single scan.
LayerGeo Features
The Attach feature joins multiple 3D geometries along defined interfaces, creating continuous multilayer structures while preserving each layer’s internal composition. It is mainly used to model layered materials such as filters, laminates, or composites with controlled spatial alignment.
The Add feature merges two voxel geometries into one by combining their occupied regions. It is used to extend structures, join material phases, or build composite models, maintaining distinct phase information for subsequent analysis.
The Subtract feature removes one geometry from another based on voxel overlap, enabling the creation of pores, channels, or clean interfaces. It is especially useful for refining scans or isolating specific material regions.
