Workshop: Simulations for Additive Manufacturing using GeoDict 2023 - Digital Materials R&D

Abstract

Additive manufacturing processes, also known as 3d printing, such as selective laser sintering - or melting, stereolithography, and binder jetting are used to produce prototypes and components. In the development of components, these additive manufacturing processes offer unimagined freedom, not achievable through traditional manufacturing processes. Being able to design the topology of the mesostructure of the components - by using lattice structures, for example - is of great importance to exploit the possibilities of additive manufacturing. In recent years the option to purely digitally modeled the structure with respect to its desired properties and afterwards manufacturing the model by AM has gained more attention because of its potential of having a highly automated and fast workflow for creating new materials.

The workshop will show structure modeling for latticed-based methods and triply periodic minimal surfaces with GeoDict. After the models are build, they are investigated with respect to their morphological (pore) and physical (permeability, conductivity, mechanical) properties. By setting up a small case study it is seen how GeoDict can be used to do a fast parameter sweep and gain insight into the dependence of the properties to the input parameters.

The workshop on additive manufacturing will reveal how easy it can be to model and determine additive manufactured models using the GeoDict software.
