In this tutorial we have analyzed the microstructure’s geometry of the scan segmented in the Import and Quality Control of a Cathode Material tutorial.
Since the structure has only 74 µm in Z-direction, the grain size distribution computed with GrainFind is influenced by removing grain fragments on the domain boundary. Less bigger grains will be found, as the probability for bigger grains to touch the domain boundary is much higher. It is possible to uncheck Remove Grain Fragments on Domain Boundary in the Identify Grains options dialog. But this might lead to wrong estimates for the grain shapes, because many boundary grains do not lie completely in the domain. Nonetheless, we definitely have a good set of parameters to be entered in GrainGeo for the generation of the statistical digital twin in the next part of this tutorial series Building a statistical digital twin of a cathode material.
