GeoDict User Guide 2025

Building a Statistical Digital Twin of a Cathode Material

This tutorial is the third part of the Digital Battery Design tutorial series:

  1. Import and Quality Control of a Cathode Material: This tutorial guides you along the steps to analyze, post-process and finally segment a 3D-scan of an NMC-cathode.
  2. Standardized Microstructure Analysis of a Cathode Material: This tutorial shows how to analyze the segmented scan regarding transport properties and pore size distribution.
  3. Building a Statistical Digital Twin of a Cathode Material: In this tutorial a statistical digital twin is built and validated using the results from the second part of this tutorial series.
  4. Digital Battery Charging Learn how to analyze the charging behavior of a digital battery consisting of bimodal electrodes.

In detail, this tutorial teaches you to do the following:

  • Creating a statistical digital twin with GrainGeo,
  • Analyzing the twin’s microstructure geometry on pore sizes, tortuosity, surface area, grain sizes, and chord lengths,
  • Validating the twin by comparing the analysis results to the results of the original data set

Generating a statistical digital twin is the starting point to interactively change the material components and parameters, e.g. the binder content in an electrode to optimize the performance of your materials.

The tutorial was created with GeoDict 2024 SP1.
