In this tutorial, you have learned how set up a simulation of flow and filtration in a complete filter. You have also seen, that some input data is necessary to perform such a simulation:
- The CAD data describing the filter has to be water-proof. If you want to use your own CAD data, check that all parts are contained in the CAD model, and that the flow cannot bypass the filter or leak through some hole in the model of the filter housing.
- You must know the effective properties of the filter media before you start simulating flow through the complete filter. Either from experimental measurements, or from simulations on the filter media scale. It is not possible to compute the filter efficiency on a model of the complete filter, this is already an input to this simulation.
- You must also enter effective properties describing the filter cake in the simulation. These will depend on the used test dust, but also on the deposition mechanism. You can use GrainGeo to create a filter cake model and estimate the flow resistivity, or derive the flow resistivity from measurements (pressure drop increase vs filter cake height).
The input data used in this tutorial was given in the blue information boxes, called 'Experimental setup and material parameters'. Replace these parameters by your own numbers, if you want to model your own filter.
