The material microstructure of a ceramic filter medium was generated using GrainGeo in GeoDict and provides the basis for simulation-based filtration analyses with FilterDict-Media. Using soot particle separation as an example, the study examines how particles are retained from an air stream within the filter medium and deposited within its structure.
The simulation enables the determination of fractional filtration efficiency for different particle sizes as well as the analysis of local particle deposition within the filter medium. In addition, the increase in pressure drop and the filtration behavior during various operating phases are evaluated—from depth filtration within the pore structure to cake filtration resulting from increasing particle deposition on the filter surface.
