Understanding Batteries Through High Resolution Imaging – Best Practices, Challenges and Use Cases
Abstract
Three-dimensional imaging of battery materials has become a convenient tool to elevate our understanding of the complex structure-performance interactions occurring inside the cell. Additionally, the need for precise model parameterization established 3D-characterization across the battery community. However, despite its broad use, no common workflows and evaluation strategies exist and the precise 3D-imaging of electronic networks remains challenging.
Our contribution introduces strategies and best-practices for the high-resolution FIB-SEM tomography of battery materials. We show how to obtain high quality image data of the porous carbon-binder network present in all state-of-the-art lithium-ion-batteries. Funneling 3D data into physically validated electrochemical continuum models validates our workflows and quantifies structure-property relations.
We then provide practical use cases on how to analyze and improve battery microstructures both virtually in GeoDict and in the laboratory. In summary, we introduce suitable workflows and provide best-practices for the characterization and quantification of conductive networks in battery electrodes. This allows for precise parameterization and elevates our understanding of the systems at hand.
