Extract More Insight from Micro-CT Data with GeoDict image analysis

Seminar recording

Micro-CT data provides valuable insights into the three-dimensional structure of materials. However, to derive reliable information from the image data, a clear workflow is required: from data import through image enhancement and segmentation to quantitative analysis, visualization, and documentation of the results.

In this seminar recording, Anton Du Plessis and Jonas Scharbernack demonstrate how GeoDict is used for 3D image processing and image analysis. The seminar is aimed at both those new to GeoDict and existing users who wish to make more targeted use of the analysis functions.

The focus is on a practical live demonstration: A micro-CT dataset is imported, denoised using a non-local means filter, segmented using a global Otsu threshold, and then quantitatively analyzed with PoroDict. The presentation also demonstrates how to plot results, save images, automatically generate PDF reports, and automate recurring tasks using macros.

In this seminar you will learn step-by-step:

  • Getting to Know GeoDict: Get an overview of GeoDict as a digital materials lab for 3D image processing, visualization, materials characterization, and simulation.
  • Importing Micro-CT Data: Load a CT image stack into GeoDict, specify the appropriate project folder, and enter the correct voxel size.
  • Preparing image data: Crop the dataset and reduce image noise using the Non-Local Means filter.
  • Segmenting materials: Generate a digital structural model from grayscale data using global threshold segmentation, e.g., the Otsu method.
  • Analyze pore space: Distinguish between open and closed pores using PoroDict and specifically evaluate closed porosity.
  • Identify pores: Detect individual pores and calculate properties such as volume, diameter, sphericity, orientation, and size distribution.
  • Visualize results: Display pores in color-coded 3D, customize charts, save images, and reuse result data.
  • Generate reports: Create automatically generated PDF reports and present analysis results to colleagues or project partners.
  • Automate workflows: Automate recurring tasks for multiple datasets using GeoDict macros and Python scripts.
